Arctic Methane is definitely the kicker for runaway global overheat but the causation tenacity of mankind to blindly go on dying the color of the sky fuzzy warm truth denying shades of gray is astronomically fixated to keep lying to themselves what is obviously already locked in. The graphs of arctic sea ice loss and potency of CH4 to force Earth temp up and of feedback loops fail to add in undercutting of ecosystems like forests and the reefs and the other things like nitrogen cycle and essentially the effect of stress of loss of arable land and water along with increase of heat of human thinking.. The ability to think clearly goes down when hot. So it is my contention that runaway has already been booted into being but can be possibly pulled back with an all out effort if done before CH4 Arctic self release kicks in vastly. At least practically, considering all the times mankind has belittled chances to stop global warming greenhouse gas release over and over again, runaway is initiated and evidenced as on. The catalytic agent is mankind and our ways now. We are swamping all systems and oblivious of it.
You raise valid points. Not all feedbacks and impacts are discussed in detail, but they are discussed at other posts. In this case, the post highlights the danger that methane releases in the Arctic will escalate into runaway warming, a danger that is all too often downplayed. There's more on feedbacks at Greenland is melting at incredible rate, and do have a look at the pages and links to other blogs in the panel on the right.
Thanks Sam, thanks for all you do. I'm hoping the need to tackle global warming will create a force for peace in the world and that a scale of change in world in finance and industry can occur in support of stopping global warming runaway from going to conclusion that can zoom up economic benefit for all peoples. It's a matter of getting the direction of goals changed away from monetary gain and that of power and to reach a critical threshold of scale so the way people make a living is in direction of countering runaway.. This would use the will to live and to give hope for loved ones as an antidote to rising force of entropy about to scuttle life. Job creation would skyrocket but showdown is going on in Syria. Yikes
I think they need a world law to only have one child per couple for about 400 - 500 years, then up it to 2 per couple there after. that would help the future, it's to late for us.
For years I have studied possible links between global warming and population growth. I wrote about this in posts such as this one. My conclusion remains that global warming is primarily caused by our choice of technologies and that the necessary shifts to preferable technologies are best achieved through local feebates, as part of a Comprehensive Plan of Action.
